Get Started

If you like the thrill of the mushroom hunt, want to learn more about the fantastic world of fungi, and want to help protect them, you’re in the right place. Are you ready to get started creating observations that will be valuable to science?

Decide how you want to start: take an easy path and learn along the way… or jump in with both feet and develop a wide range of skills to contribute even more. FunDiS values citizen scientists at all levels. We are a community that offers guidance along the way.

What kind of mushroomer are you?

    • Level 1: DOCUMENT  You find and photograph fungi, create notes about the habitat, and upload your images on iNaturalist or Mushroom Observer.
    • Level 2: Level 1 + SEQUENCE  You dry your collections and take samples for DNA sequencing
    • Level 3: Level 1 + 2 + VOUCHER  You also deposit the collections in a fungarium for others to study later
    • Level 4: SUPER USER  You perform additional lab work. Please see our Four Levels blog for the complete story.

Read: A four-tiered model for crowdsourcing fungal biodiversity citizen science. It describes how all skill levels can contribute to citizen science.

Wherever you begin, you’ll join hundreds of citizen scientists in projects across North America. You’ll contribute to what we (amateurs at all levels and academic mycologists alike) know about the wonderful Kingdom Fungi. You’ll learn some fascinating perspectives about fungi and their role in ecosystems. You’ll see some crazy beautiful fungi (and likely some life forms you never thought were fungi). And you’ll know your contributions to fungal science are important.
